A Brief Discussion on Operational Faults and Solutions for Smelting Furnaces

I. Causes of the smelting furnace explosion: 1. Since coal powder has both self-flowing and explosive properties, an excessive amount of coal powder can suddenly ignite and expand, leading to an explosion. 2. When dry slag is directly discharged into the pool, the hot rolled surface cools rapidly while the high internal temperature generates a large volume of steam that cannot dissipate, ultimately causing an explosion.

I. Smelting Furnace Explosion

Reason:

1. Because coal dust has the properties of self-flow and explosiveness, when the amount of coal dust is excessive, a large quantity of it can suddenly ignite and expand, leading to an explosion accident.

2. Directly discharging the dry slag into the pool cools down the large area of hot-rolled surfaces, while the high internal temperature causes the generated steam to build up—leading to potential explosions if it cannot dissipate.

Preventive measures:

1. Launch Smelting Furnace At that time, first turn on the exhaust fan, and then, once negative pressure is established at the three air outlets, activate the blower to prepare for material feeding. As the material reaches the outlet area, the screw feeder will begin dispensing a small amount of coal.

2. When shutting down the furnace, first stop the coal supply, then cut off the air flow, to prevent coal from settling in the coal conveying pipes and flue ducts.

3. Replace the spiral coal feeder that will be deactivated in the bunker, shut off the balance air and the large stopcock, open the exhaust valve, then start the spiral coal feeder that is about to be activated. Afterward, close all valves—such as the air valve that needs to remain closed—and follow the proper sequence for sending coal, adhering to the specified coal-handling requirements.

II. Large amounts of slag impact the tuyere or horizontal flue three times.

Reason: Due to insufficient coal—either because there is little coal or none at all—the heat supply drops, causing the furnace temperature to decline. This increases the viscosity of the slag, making its gravitational force weaker than the blast pressure, which then carries the slag toward the third tuyere or upward into the horizontal flue created by the rising gas flow.

Method: Appropriately increase coal supply.
